Tenho (Eu): Specifically used for “I have”.
Example: Eu tenho um carro. (I have a car.)
Tem (Ele/Ela/Você): Used for “He/She/It/You have”.
Example: Tem um carro. (You have a car.)
Example: Ele tem um carro. (He has a car.)
In Portugal, “Você” occupies a strange middle ground.
It is too formal for friends (where you use Tu).
It is considered “lazy” or even disrespectful for strangers or elders (where you should use O Senhor/A Senhora).
If you say “Você tem…” to a waiter or a shopkeeper, it can feel like you are pointing a finger at them. It sounds a bit like calling someone “You there.”
